Pirôžky

Pirôžky is a tiny, beloved Bratislava institution: a hole-in-the-wall serving little sweet buns fried up and filled with poppy seed, plum jam, ground walnut or apple. It is one of those rare old-school spots that has quietly outlasted Communism, the Velvet Revolution and every wave of change since, feeding generations of locals on the cheap.

There is no ceremony here — you queue at the counter, point, and walk away with a warm, sugar-dusted bun for pocket change. Each one is a small, comforting hit of old Bratislava, best eaten on the spot while it is still warm. You will find it right on the shopping street of Obchodná in the old town.

Local tip: Go with coins in hand and order a couple of different fillings to compare — the poppy seed is the classic. It is a snack rather than a meal, so treat it as a sweet pause between sights.
