Kīpsala Beach is Riga's cheeky little city beach — a strip of sand on the Daugava's Kīpsala island, directly across the water from the old town. It is where Rigans come on a warm day to swim, sunbathe and barbecue, all with a postcard view of the medieval skyline and the spires of the left bank shimmering just across the river.
The water is calm and shallow enough for a paddle, there is soft sand and grassy patches to spread out on, and the vibe is relaxed and local rather than touristy. It is an easy walk or cycle over the bridge from the centre, which makes it a brilliant unexpected escape on a hot summer afternoon.
Local tip: Go in the late afternoon and stay for sunset, when the old town lights up across the river. Bring your own supplies — facilities are limited — and note the season is short, so it is really a warm-weather treat.
