Quba District lies roughly 200 kilometres north of Baku on the eastern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, and produces around a third of Azerbaijan's apples, an industry that grew after farmland was privatised to individual smallholders from the mid-1990s. An annual Apple Festival has been held in the district since 2012. Day trips from Baku built around the orchards typically combine a drive north along the Caspian coast with a visit to a working farm in one of the upland villages, where visitors pick fruit in season, see how the trees are tended and eat a home-cooked meal with a farming family using regional produce. Several operators run versions of this itinerary, some as a single long day and some with an overnight stay, usually with private transport from Baku accommodation and an English-speaking guide.
