Every Sunday morning the grand Avenida Afonso Pena in central Belo Horizonte fills with the Feira Hippie — by most reckonings the largest open-air arts-and-crafts fair in Latin America. With something like 1,400 stalls spread along the avenue, it is a vast, buzzing institution that draws tens of thousands of belo-horizontinos every week.
The sheer range is the appeal: handmade crafts, art, clothing for the whole family, shoes, leather, jewellery, homeware and local snacks, organised loosely into sectors so you can graze your way through. Live music and a festive, family atmosphere make it as much a Sunday social ritual as a shopping trip.
Local tip: It runs on Sunday mornings only, roughly from dawn to early afternoon, so come early for the best pick and the coolest hours. Bring cash and be ready to haggle a little.
