Kumpelnest 3000 is a Berlin legend — a gloriously trashy, kitsch-drenched dive bar that opened back in 1987 inside a former brothel and never bothered to renovate away the louche charm. Chandeliers, faded wallpaper and a wall of odd pictures set the scene for one of the city's best-loved late-night institutions, equal parts queer hangout and everyone-welcome party.
Turn up late and it swings from mellow dive bar to frenetic dancefloor, the speakers pumping out disco and late-70s and 80s hits while a wonderfully mixed crowd packs in. Drinks are cheap and the vibe is pure old West Berlin — unpretentious, a little sleazy, and all the better for it.
Local tip: It gets going very late and stays open until dawn, so treat it as a nightcap rather than a first stop. Come for the atmosphere, not the polish — that is entirely the point.
