How Many Days Do You Need in Naples? A Local’s Guide

Quick answer: Two full days is enough for Naples itself. Add a third for Pompeii and a fourth or fifth to reach Capri, Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast. Naples is intense and best savoured, not rushed.

How many days do you need in Naples?

Naples is loud, ancient and gloriously alive. Two days covers the historic centre and its food; but the city is also the gateway to some of Italy’s greatest day trips, which is where extra days pay off.

2 days in Naples

Day one: walk Spaccanapoli, see the Veiled Christ at the Cappella Sansevero, and eat a Margherita at Keste. Day two: the Archaeological Museum, the underground city, and fried pizza from Da Fernanda.

3 days: add Pompeii

The ruins of Pompeii, frozen by Vesuvius, are an easy and unforgettable day trip.

4 to 5 days: Capri and the Amalfi Coast

With more time, take the ferry to Capri or the train to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Naples makes a superb, affordable base for the whole bay.

Getting around

The historic centre is walkable (and chaotic). Use the metro and the Circumvesuviana train for Pompeii and Sorrento; ferries leave from the port for the islands.
