Spanjaardsgat

Centrum  •  ★ 4.4  •  $

The Spanjaardsgat is one of Bredas most picturesque spots, a twin-towered water gate dating from the sixteenth century that once guarded the entrance to the castle harbour. Its name recalls the legendary Peat Barge trick by which Dutch soldiers hidden in a turf boat recaptured the city in 1590. The gate reflected in the water beside the old harbour is a favourite photo spot and a reminder of Bredas fortified past.
