Tucked between Strada Lipscani and Strada Blanari, Hanul cu Tei is one of the last old merchants' inns still standing in Bucharest's Historic Centre. Built in 1833 and preserved almost exactly as it began, this narrow cobbled passage is our favourite escape from the Old Town crowds – a quiet courtyard lined with art galleries, antique boutiques and art-supply shops set above deep vaulted cellars.
Step through the ornate wrought-iron gates and wander slowly: the little galleries change their displays often, so there's usually something new to discover, and it's an easy detour whether you're browsing for a print or just after a photogenic corner of old Bucharest.
Local tip: Come by day when the shops and galleries are open; the passage is at its most atmospheric in soft afternoon light.
