Tara Books is an independent publisher founded in 1994, known worldwide for handmade picture books produced on fair-trade principles in its own Chennai workshop. Around 25 artisans from nearby villages hand-screen-print and hand-bind each book, drawing on Indian folk and tribal art traditions like Warli and Gond painting, and the Thiruvanmiyur building doubles as bookstore, gallery and workshop.
Local tip: Worth a visit even if you're not buying — the workshop and gallery space is as interesting as the books themselves.
