The Alfond Inn at Rollins

Opened in 2013 on land given to Rollins College, the Alfond Inn is unusual among American hotels in that its operating profits fund scholarships for Rollins students. The building is modern but low-rise and arranged around courtyards, set a couple of streets back from Park Avenue in a residential part of Winter Park. Its public rooms double as a gallery for the Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art, a museum-standard holding shared with the college's art museum and rotated periodically; the works can be seen by non-residents as well as guests. There is a restaurant, a bar, a rooftop pool deck and a spa. The setting suits travellers who want the lakes, bookshops and cafes of Winter Park rather than the theme-park corridor, with the SunRail platform and the Saturday farmers' market both within walking distance.
