Permanently closed. Derelict; the surrounding downtown district is not accessible to visitors. We keep this page because people still look for it, and because what happened here is part of the city’s story.
The red iron halls with their minarets were shipped from France in 1891 and became the emblem of downtown Port-au-Prince, rebuilt with great fanfare after the 2010 earthquake.
One hall burned in 2018 and the market never recovered. Reporting from 2024 onward describes it as derelict in a downtown emptied of commerce.
Good to know: For Haitian craft, the December artisan fair in Pétion-Ville and the fair-trade co-operatives are where the makers are now.
