Byron and Virginia Hardin opened Hodad's as a burger stand in Ocean Beach in 1969; the business moved to Voltaire Street in 1979 and to its present Newport Avenue site in 1991. The interior is layered with number plates, stickers left by customers, surfboards and skateboards, and the front section of a Volkswagen van serves as seating. The order is a bacon cheeseburger in which the bacon is pressed into a flat patty, with onion rings, chips and milkshakes alongside. Portions are large and the queue frequently reaches the pavement, particularly since the restaurant's television exposure. There are further branches downtown on Broadway and a concession at Petco Park, but the Ocean Beach original, a block from the sand, is the one that carries the neighbourhood's character.
