Plaza de la Encarnacion (Las Setas)

The Metropol Parasol, known locally as Las Setas, the mushrooms, is a timber lattice structure rising above Plaza de la Encarnacion in central Seville. It was designed by the German architect Jurgen Mayer H. after a 2004 competition and built between 2005 and 2011, the work delayed when Roman and Moorish remains were uncovered during excavation. It is among the largest timber-framed structures in the world. Beneath it the Antiquarium displays those excavated remains, including Roman mosaics and house foundations. At plaza level sits a covered market with produce stalls and tapas bars. A lift carries visitors up through the columns to a curving rooftop walkway roughly 27 metres above the square, with views across the cathedral, the Giralda and the old town. The rooftop and the Antiquarium are ticketed separately, and the site opens daily with last entry in the late evening. The nearest tram stop is Archivo de Indias, with several bus routes stopping at the plaza.
