Rus Market

Rus Market, known in Albanian as Tregu Rus and also as Sheshi Rus i Madh, stands on the main approach road into Shkoder and forms part of the city's principal trading infrastructure. For close to three decades it operated in poor sanitary conditions, a long-standing complaint of traders and shoppers alike. In 2024 the Municipality of Shkoder and the Agency for Rural and Agricultural Development rebuilt the site from scratch over roughly five months at a cost of around 37 million leke, creating about 115 purpose-built vending units with modern facilities. The rebuilt market reopened in December 2024. Further phases are planned, including a dedicated section for meat and fish with slaughterhouse facilities. The works extended beyond the market itself to renovated facades, roofs and surrounding infrastructure, a new playground and proposed underground parking. It remains one of the city's main retail hubs for everyday goods, serving both households in Shkoder and producers from the surrounding countryside.
