magdas HOTEL is a social business of Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna, staffed by people with a refugee background working alongside trained hospitality professionals and apprentices, with the team drawn from around eleven nationalities. It opened at Ungargasse 38 in the third district in October 2022, in a converted building formerly known as the Stephanushaus. Reuse governs the design: 1960s armchairs, tables built from old fitted cupboards, bar elements taken from a former confessional and a garden fence made from salvaged balcony railings. There are 85 rooms, many with balconies, including barrier-free rooms and rooms fitted for guests with visual or hearing impairments. The magdas LOKAL cafe and bar and the courtyard garden are open to non-residents. Surpluses fund the social mission.
