An outdoor memorial at the junction of Vermont Avenue, 10th and U Streets, centred on Ed Hamilton's bronze sculpture The Spirit of Freedom, showing uniformed soldiers and a sailor with a family group behind them. Curved stainless steel panels behind it, the Wall of Honor, carry the names of more than 209,000 members of the United States Colored Troops and their white officers, listed by regiment. The site is administered by the National Park Service, open at all hours and free to visit. It stands at the heart of the U Street corridor, historically the centre of Black cultural life in Washington. An associated museum operates nearby, though its opening arrangements have varied and are worth checking in advance.
