Kani Ka Pila Grille

The poolside bar and grill at the Outrigger Reef, and the most dependable place in Waikiki to hear Hawaiian music played by Hawaiian musicians. Its name means roughly let the music play, and since 2008 it has run live sets every evening, drawing slack-key guitarists, falsetto singers and ukulele players who also record and tour. Performers change nightly and the schedule is published in advance. The setting is open-air beneath a monkeypod tree, with a menu of local plates and cocktails; seating is first-come and fills early at weekends. There is no cover charge and non-residents are welcome. The bar sits on the beach side of Kalia Road, a few minutes' walk from Fort DeRussy and the Hilton lagoon, at the quieter end of the strip.
