Hooulu Aina

A 100-acre nature preserve at the head of Kalihi Valley, run by Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services, a community health centre serving one of Honolulu's lowest-income and most heavily immigrant districts. The land is managed as a health intervention as much as a conservation project: clearing invasive species, replanting native forest, growing kalo and other food, and distributing produce locally, on the principle that access to land improves the wellbeing of the surrounding community. Volunteer workdays are free and open to the public, with native forest care, gardening and reforestation sessions running on set days, and a digital waiver completed beforehand. The valley lies about fifteen minutes' drive inland from downtown, and the access road is narrow and unsealed in places.
