Wells’Built Museum of African American History

A museum in Parramore occupying the former Wells' Built Hotel, opened in 1929 by Dr William Monroe Wells, one of Orlando's first African American physicians, to accommodate Black travellers and performers excluded from segregated hotels. Musicians appearing at the neighbouring South Street Casino, among them Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Ray Charles, stayed here. The building was restored in the 1990s and is now run as a museum by a preservation non-profit, with rooms furnished as they would have been, displays on segregation-era Orlando and memorabilia relating to the performers. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Opening is limited, with weekday hours and only one weekend a month, so confirming in advance is sensible. Parramore lies immediately west of the downtown core.
