Best Day Trips from Riga: Sigulda, Turaida and Beyond

Quick answer: If you only have one free day, go to Sigulda and Turaida in the Gauja valley. You can do it on your own by train in about an hour and a quarter. A guided day trip makes sense if you want Turaida, Gūtmaņa Cave and the castles without working out how to cross the valley. Jūrmala is the easy beach half-day, 30 minutes by train, with no tour needed. Rundāle Palace is the one where a tour earns its price, because the bus connection is awkward outside summer.

Which day trip fits your trip

Riga’s day trips split in two. The Gauja valley and the coast are on direct train lines, so a tour is a convenience. Rundāle and the Lithuanian border are where booking ahead pays off.

  • Best for a first trip out of Riga: Sigulda, Turaida and Gūtmaņa Cave.
  • Best for castle lovers with a full day: Sigulda, Turaida and Cēsis combined.
  • Best on a warm afternoon: Jūrmala, 30 minutes by train.
  • Best for walkers and photographers: the Great Ķemeri Bog Boardwalk.
  • Best for palace interiors: Rundāle, ideally on a tour.
  • Best for adrenaline: the summer bobsleigh run at Sigulda.

Sigulda and Turaida: the one most people should pick

Sigulda sits on the edge of the Gauja valley, where the river has cut deep into red sandstone. Three castles face each other across the valley: Sigulda’s ruined Livonian Order castle, Krimulda on the far bank, and the red-brick tower of Turaida.

Turaida Museum Reserve is the main event. Climb the castle tower for the view down the valley, then walk the song hill and the grave of the Turaida Rose, the heroine of one of Latvia’s best-known love legends. Below it, Gūtmaņa Cave is the widest and highest cave in the Baltics, about 19 m deep. Look for the names and coats of arms carved into the sandstone, some of them from the 17th century. Entry to the cave is free.

The link between the two sides of the valley is the Sigulda cable car. It has crossed the Gauja for more than half a century, running 1,020 m at 43 m above the ground, with cabins every 20 to 30 minutes. Ride it one way and walk back past Gūtmaņa Cave.

  • Travel time: about 1 hour 15 minutes by train from Riga, with trains and buses roughly every hour. The center of Sigulda is a walk from the station.
  • Independent or guided: both work. On your own, the only puzzle is crossing the valley to Turaida. A guided trip solves that.
  • Book ahead? Not essential. Turaida tickets are sold on site (adults €9 in 2026). Book a tour a few days ahead in summer and on autumn weekends.
  • Trade-off: Turaida alone needs at least three hours. On a tour you will move faster than you might like.

Our pick is the Turaida and Sigulda day trip with a guide. It runs about six hours, leaves from St. Peter’s Church in Old Town, and includes Turaida entry. The cable car is an optional extra. Check Turaida and Sigulda day trip dates from Riga.

Want more than a sightseeing loop? The Sigulda hiking tour covers about 15 km on foot between Krimulda, Turaida and the sandstone cliffs. The Gauja kayaking trip puts you on the river for five to six hours. For speed, the summer bobsleigh ride takes you down the competition track’s 13 turns with a professional pilot, at up to 85 km/h. The minimum age is six. See summer bobsleigh and cable car tickets.

For lunch, Kaķu māja on Pils iela is a canteen-style bistro with its own bakery: you queue, point and eat well for little. For a longer meal on the Turaida side, Kungu rija is a log-built restaurant named after the manor’s old threshing barn. Before you leave, stop at the walking stick workshop. A Sigulda stick is the souvenir we rank first in what to buy in Latvia.

Cēsis: add it if you want the castle by candlelight

Cēsis is further up the same railway line, and its castle is the most atmospheric on this list. The Livonian Brothers of the Sword founded it in 1209. At the visitor center you are handed a candle lantern and a map, and you climb the unlit Western Tower on your own.

  • Travel time: roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by train, depending on the service. The castle is about a 10-minute walk from the station.
  • Independent or guided: on your own, Cēsis fills a day. A tour adds Sigulda and Turaida.
  • Book ahead? Yes for the combined tour, which runs in small groups.
  • Trade-off: the three-castle day is about ten hours and roughly 200 km in a minibus.

We list the Sigulda, Cēsis and Turaida castles day trip with food tasting. Groups are capped at seven, and the trip includes all three castle entries and a stop at a rye bread bakery. Compare Sigulda, Cēsis and Turaida tours.

Jūrmala: the beach day you do not need a tour for

Jūrmala is a long, thin resort town of pine forest, wooden villas and pale sand on the Gulf of Riga. Get off at Majori, the center, which puts you at the end of Jomas iela, a pedestrian street about 1.3 km long. Walk it, then cut through to the beach, where the water stays shallow a long way out.

  • Travel time: 30 minutes from Riga Central Station to Majori, for €2.30.
  • Independent or guided: independent. Buy a ticket and go.
  • Book ahead? No.
  • Trade-off: if you drive, you need to buy a Jūrmala vehicle entry pass. The train is easier.

Ķemeri bog boardwalk: the quiet one

At the western end of the same line, Ķemeri National Park has the best short walk near Riga. The Great Ķemeri Bog Boardwalk crosses a raised bog of pools, moss and stunted pines. The long loop is about 3.4 km and includes an observation tower; a short loop is about 1.4 km. Watch for sundew, a small carnivorous plant, at the edge of the boards. The boardwalk is free and open all year.

  • Travel time: under an hour by train to Ķemeri, then roughly 45 minutes on foot, following signs.
  • Independent or guided: easy on your own if you do not mind the walk from the station. Tours drive you to the trailhead and usually add Jūrmala.
  • Book ahead? Only if you want the tour.
  • Trade-off: the boards get slippery in rain, and snow is not cleared in winter.

Rundāle Palace: where a tour earns its price

Rundāle is a baroque palace in farmland south of Riga. Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli designed it for Ernst Johann von Biron, Duke of Courland, and the first construction phase ran from 1736 to 1740. Go for the state rooms and the French garden.

  • Travel time: about 80 km south of Riga by road.
  • Independent or guided: from May to September a direct bus runs from Riga, leaving at 9:20 and 12:20. Outside that season you change in Bauska, which eats into the day. A tour is the simpler choice.
  • Book ahead? Yes for a tour. Palace tickets bought online are 10% cheaper.
  • Trade-off: the main exhibition costs €12 for adults, or €17 with the French garden, and tours do not always include both.

Many tours pair Rundāle with Bauska Castle and the Hill of Crosses, just over the border in northern Lithuania. It is a long day, but easy without a car. Compare Rundāle Palace day trips.
